How to alter the visual aspects of the site to suit your needs

The Harper Adams site has been designed to be customisable, enabling users with special requirements to get the most from the site. The default setting uses a black Arial font on a predominantly white background. This will be highly useable, readable and accessible for most people but some of you may find that readability can be enhanced by changing the font or page layout.

Changing the font or layout

Clicking on the links in the left hand menu of this page allows you to change the font style used throughout this site. Clicking on the without styles link will remove all presentational layout on the page, leaving the page in a highly readable format that is suitable to customisation using your own custom style sheets.

Changing the font size

Most browsers have inbuilt functionality to allow you to change the font sizes of web sites, the Harper Adams site has been designed to be accessible and usable whatever font size you choose. Below are some instructions for changing font size on various browsers.

  • Internet Explorer (Win) - Go to menu view/text size and select a size. Alternatively, press Ctrl and use your mouse wheel to change the text size.
  • Firefox - Go to menu view/text size and select increase or decrease. Alternatively, press Ctrl and use your mouse wheel to change the text size. Firefox, like all Gecko browsers can use a much larger range or font sizes than internet explorer.
  • Opera - Go to menu view/zoom and select a percentage zoom value. Alternatively, press Ctrl and use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out. Opera actually zooms into the page rather that changing the font size itself. This has the advantage of leaving the layout unchanged while changing the size of images as well as text.
  • Safari (Mac)- From the Safari menu, select Preferences. Click Appearance. To change the standard font or fixed-width font used in pages, click the appropriate Select button. Change the font size using the slider bar.

How to use your own custom stylesheet

You may have specific requirements which are best solved by using your own cutom style sheet to control the presentation of websites. The Harper Adams website has been designed without using HTML tables so is very suitable for customisation in this way. Instructions on how to use your custom stylesheet in Internet Explorer are provided here.
